In the spirit of Shubigi Rao’s project Pulp III: A Short Biography of the Banished Book for the Singapore Pavilion curated by Ute Meta Bauer, writers, librarians, printers and other members of the community featured in the artist’s film and book came together for an afternoon of public reading; ranging from the historical connections between access to knowledge and political power, to the strategies of tyranny to silence and censor. A Venetian librarian shared stories of banned books and her favourite books of resistance, while we heard how alternative archives can act as vital safeguards of democracy. Through these stories, we saw the book as an embodiment of collective thought, labour and readership, and recognised this medium as an intimate holder of humanity and community. Besides the artist, curator and Pavilion architect Laura Miotto, speakers included Anna Toscano, Stefania Bertelli, Marco Borghi, Mario Infelise, Federico Bucci, and more.

The event was held on Sunday, 24 April 2022, 2.30 to 4.30pm at the Fondazione Querini Stampalia Auditorium.
